TEC Center friend and our favorite “PlayVangelist”, David Kleeman of PlayCollective, describes screen time in the digital age as more akin to window time in this thoughtful Cynsiders column on Cynopsis Media. “With proliferating platforms and devices and such diverse content and uses, mere duration of screen time is less important than what content is being consumed (or created) – as well as the context of when, where and why it is being utilized.” He points to the unique properties of media like connectivity, communication, cameras and creativity tools that can extend and deepen the screen-as-window concept. Try this – the next time you observe a young child with a screen, ask yourself if it is a screen or a window, or what you can do to extend the screen experience into a window of learning opportunity.
